She lies on her bed in deep repose
Flat on her back, straight till her toes
Opening her eyes to acknowledge and see
A smile and squeeze of hand is rendered to me
Mother she is to my college friend
Smart and savvy in the city’s latest trend
Is ravaged now by Time’s sure breeze
Nature walking off with both her knees
Medical science dares to replace at all cost
She waits impatiently, to regain what’s lost
Her daughters hurry and flurry to provide what’s best
Tending and caring to the needs of Mother at rest
In years ahead, the daughters in bed may lie
And have their offspring hover close by
Through pain, suffering and hospital tenure
The bodies of mothers must endure
If this, the body, is doomed to die
There is no point in being wretched and cry
Death comes full circle, as it must
Birth begins anew with a thrust
Mothers and Daughters are we all
Previous names and forms can we recall?
Life we are – ever-changing and continuing
This Knowledge – with it – does solace bring
With the secret of Existence known
What’s the fuss in living or dying alone?
